The flashing or glowing effect in moonstone is called adularescence. This optical phenomenon occurs because of the unique structure of the stone. Moonstone is composed of thin layers of two types of feldspar: orthoclase and albite. When light enters the stone, it scatters between these layers, creating the soft, billowy glow that seems to move across the surface.
